Was Timothy Leary Right? -Time Magazine
I wonder if the Author actually took the time to read Dr. Tim Leary’s voluminous collection of books and articles on LSD before proposing to dismiss them with a fell swoop of cynical disdain for his readers and the gravity of the topic in question.
By this I mean this supposed journalists has not taken the time to educate himself in the most direct manner of what Dr. Leary was trying to engage the populace to do. Which is to “Question Authority and Think For Yourself”
Had he actually researched the subject of this article he would surely have been compelled to self- analyze and hopefully arrive at the fact that his lack of experience with the subject necessarily precludes his ability to author any true or authentic explanation of the facts of the story.
This reminds me of an old zen parable. I can tell you about the taste of an apple or I can save us both alot of time and serve you up a slice. Thus trusting your own ability to experience and then analyze the experience for yourself.
The author uses the following anecdote out of context might I add to explain how LSD might cause one to rush into an animalistic decision which is not wholesome in the eyes of society.
“Psychedelics chemically alter the way your brain takes in information and may cause you to lose control of typical thought patterns. The theory motivating the recent research is that if your thoughts are depressed or obsessive, the drugs may reveal a path through them. For Leary and his circle–which influenced millions of Americans to experiment with drugs–psychedelics’ seemingly boundless possibilities led to terrible recklessness. There’s a jaw-dropping passage in last year’s authoritative Leary biography by Robert Greenfield in which Leary and two friends ingest an astonishing 31 psilocybin pills in Leary’s kitchen while his 13-year-old daughter has a pajama party upstairs. Stupefied, one of the friends climbs into the girl’s bed and has to be pulled from the room.
OMG!!! Well here is the kicker. Last year’s “authoritative” Biography is not the Auto-Biography of Dr. Leary. And he is dead now and so conveniently not available for comment. The author of this article alludes to Leary’s companion attempting to engage in pedophilia while under the influence of LSD.
Now I am not discounting that is what was occurring on some level, rather by not presenting the full picture you are left to assume that under the influence of LSD your most base and primal instincts will win out and you will be tempted to commit sexual offenses or who knows maybe dance in the streets! What I mean by this is the situation is one any honest person can attest too. The Sexual attractiveness of those coming into their sexuality. Rather than treat this as a Taboo and avoid further discussion as to not offend our dinner guests. What if we confronted this reality head on?? Dr. Leary does this in oh so many ways and so did an entire generation of the 60’s enabling the dismantling of archaic and draconian legislation and power structures which unfortunately are now trying to reassert themselves through dramatic and disgusting power plays in the world stage. Iraq come to mind?
Back to the roots of pedophilia. Yes mankind is still evolving, yes every human has in their DNA the collective memory of all life to this point. Less than 100 years ago it would have been perfectly alright for the gentlemen to have bedded a maiden from age 12. Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis recent rock icons are a testament to this fact.
In past generations this was seen as ensuring your bloodline was more likely to continue as you were mating with a woman young enough to endure labor and most likely survive to nurse the child. So rather than cringe at this man’s “deviance” why not spend time to illuminate the path that opened up from the experience.
Meaning when the gentlemen was subdued they all concurred that one does not have the right to impinge upon another’s trip. Meaning another’s life. Meaning everyone is born with an innate and divine sovereignty and this experience reaffirmed it. Also you have to read for yourself to gather what is being said. That the gentlemen’s shadow was becoming dominant and we all have a shadow. Those who live in ignorance of their shadows greatly fear it and thus give it too much power over their lives.
Again Dr. Leary from experience and through rigorous scientific inquiry reveals lucidly the best way to
go about experiencing an Acid Trip if one is so inclined.
The reality is that Alcohol which is a legal drug in America is more likely to produce such an offense as it lowers your consciousness and causes stupefication in those desiring such an effect.
The goal of an acid trip is to become more self-aware about your conditioned robotic behavior patterns, your own personal neurosis is made aware to your conscious mind. From there you can learn to imprint your own mind in ways that are favorable to your own experience. Each of us is creating our realities whether we realize this or not. This is also confirmed by Dr. Bruce Lipton and his Epigenetic research. What Dr. Leary was doing was making this fact an experience for mankind rather than keeping it an abstract symbol to be intellectualized and therefore killed. Meaning not alive.
You can think for yourself, research for yourself and decide for yourself if this is true by reading Dr. Timothy Leary’s own Auto Biographical book “High Priest” which is thankfully conveniently available on google books. Please read pages 99-103 online and ask yourself whether or not the author of the article was right to condense 4 pages of an account directly from the source into the the mockery of responsible journalism which is his manufactured and self-serving account of the facts of this story.
Had he actually read the books of the man he is seeking to undercut and dissuade you from encountering he may have experienced a ping of conscience for this gossip. And gossip is what it is. And many have been beaten over the head in this world by the fear of gossip. Gossip is essentially ill informed slander parading as a harmless reprieve from your own reality at the expense of another. Mainly it is slander or I dare to say reputation rape. Also known as cue the horns “PROPAGANDA!” Or in Marketing Terms “PR!” YAY!!!!
The ultimate sign of cowardice.
So hopefully you have read the article and forgive me for not posting it directly as I tried to snapshot the screen and use photobucket to post the image but was unable. So please a little effort yields mighty results ie don’t be a lazy ass and go to the link!
I will also speak for Dr. Leary in this regard and defend the absent. Dr. Leary never recommends the indiscriminate use of LSD. Rather he takes pains to explain what LSD does and is from the chemical level of interaction to the spiritual dimensions that it can open up for the user.
He is portrayed as a renegade Johnny Appleseed and juxtaposed with the much more docile and exceedingly plain (domesticated), preferred and acceptable Scientist in Dr. Richard Doblin
That’s possible, but today we have no priestly Leary figure spewing vertiginous pro-drug proclamations. Instead we have a Leary for a less naive age: Richard Doblin. Also a Harvard guy–his Ph.D. is in public policy–Doblin founded the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) in 1986 to help scientists get funding and approval to study the drugs. (Doblin, 53, says he was too shy for the ’60s, but he was inspired by the work of psychologist Stanislav Grof, who authored a 1975 book about promising LSD research–research that ended with antidrug crackdowns.) Doblin has painstakingly worked with intensely skeptical federal authorities to win necessary permissions. MAPS helped launch all four of the current Ecstasy studies, a process that took two decades. It’s the antithesis of Leary’s approach.
All drugs have benefits and risks, but in psychedelics we have been tempted to see only one or the other. Not anymore.
All in All I am happy to see LSD atleast covered in Big Brother’s corporate media. And if you find that description of the media system (notice I did not say “our”, do you own stock? Sit on their board meetings? Edit? Report?, guess what it’s not yours then is it) I highly highly recommend you watch Noam Chomsky and Edward S. Hermans classic “Manufacturing Consent”
And as Dr. Leary implored us all to do “Question Authority and Think For Yourself”
